Kevin Phillips: Kean Bryan could get West Brom debut v QPR tonight
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kean Bryan could make his West Brom debut against QPR at The Hawthorns on Friday, according to Kevin Phillips.
Sky Sports has reported that Bryan, 24, is in contention to play in the Championship fixture after spending the last few weeks building up his fitness with the Baggies.
Conor Townsend has played the last two games as the left-sided centre-back but Phillips feels Bryan could replace Townsend there so the 28-year-old can move to his favoured wing-back role.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “When you’ve drawn three in a row, you have to try something because you need to win a match.
“If they don’t get a result against QPR, there could be a slight bit of pressure going Ismael’s way and there’s already some frustration from the supporters.
“A change of personnel, bringing in someone fresh might give them a little boost and can move Townsend to his best position in the left wing-back role to get balls in the box.
“If you’re playing with three up top, you need to get balls in the box, it’s as simple as that and Townsend’s one of the best at doing that.
“It might be the right time to bring Bryan in and give him a chance.”
Bryan has never played in the Championship in his career.
Before featuring just 13 times in the Premier League for Sheffield United last season, the ex-Manchester City defender had only ever played 50 times in League One.
He’s left-sided so could be an asset for Albion’s back-three.
