Kevin Phillips: Cardiff own goal v West Brom was ‘comedy of errors’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips found Curtis Nelson’s own goal against West Brom on Tuesday night to be the result of a “comedy of errors”.

Cardiff lost 4-0 at home against the Baggies on Tuesday night with Mick McCarthy’s defence being unable to cope with the away side’s attack – and also being unable to cope with themselves.

Nelson’s own goal saw the Cardiff player essentially boot the ball into the back of his net as he attempted to clear it.

Ex-Albion striker Phillips sees the funny side but he doubts Cardiff manager McCarthy was laughing about it after the game.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “No player tries to score an own goal, do they?

“It was a comedy of errors but I think what we saw from Cardiff the other night, they were all over the place. West Brom tore them apart.

“It was a comical one but I’m sure Mick McCarthy wasn’t laughing about it after the game.”

West Brom

Albion have certainly forced a number of own goals this season but none have been quite as comical as Nelson’s.

It wasn’t even forced either, the Cardiff player took a swipe at the ball to make what seemed like an easy clearance. However, he instead booted it into his own net.

We’ll take it. And we’ll take every other own goal scored for us this season.

In other West Brom news, this big-money player may never pull on Albion’s colours again.
