West Brom manager Valerien Ismael shares insight into how he scouts players

West Brom manager Valerien Ismael has revealed that fitness data and statistics help him scout players.

Speaking to the Express & Star, the Frenchman went into great detail about looking for new players and deciding who he wants to sign.

This seems like a very detailed process, and it is fascinating to hear him talking about this ahead of the January window.

He said: “The principle is intensity – the players in each position must hit certain numbers.

“I have gathered over the last three years all the information and numbers from all the teams I played within our formation. And I can say exactly which number they need to reach.

“If a player isn’t reaching the numbers, it’s a question of can he? If not, you move on to the next one.”

Fascinating insight from Ismael.

This is brilliant to read, and it is great that Ismael took some time out to speak about how and why he identifies players.

It seems as if the main focus is on fitness and if any of the players he scouts can fit into his favoured 3-4-3 formation.

If not, then it is unlikely that he will sign that player in question.

Now, this has good and bad points because it means that every player that West Brom sign under Ismael can fit into that 3-4-3.

However, what if a good player comes along that is available, but because he doesn’t fit the system, then the Baggies don’t make a move for him?

So, it is great to hear Ismael talk about this sort of thing, and this provides just a little bit of insight into how he identifies transfer targets.

However, it seems as if the system comes above everything for Ismael, which is both good and bad.

In other West Brom news, Max Rushden has had his say on Callum Robinson.
