Carlton Palmer rules out West Brom’s chances of landing Trevor Chalobah
West Brom held positive talks with Chelsea defender Trevor Chalobah over a summer loan move, according to Birmingham Mail.
However, manager Thomas Tuchel insisted the 22-year-old was in his plans for the campaign, and Carlton Palmer believes a potential January move to The Hawthorns for him is off the cards following his impressive campaign in the Premier League.
Chalobah has featured in eight games across all competitions for Chelsea so far, and while he would love to play more, Palmer does not see him leaving Stamford Bridge for West Brom when the winter transfer window opens.
The pundit told This is Futbol when asked if his old club still had a chance of signing the defender: “He’ll want to stay in the Premier League. I mean, he’s playing and he’s playing well for Chelsea.
“I don’t see the player becoming available in the next transfer window. I really don’t see that happening.
“He’s in the side and he’s playing regularly and he’s playing well. So I think that ship’s sailed.”
Moving on
With Dara O’Shea still out injured, West Brom would have been able to call upon Chalobah had a loan deal worked out.
However, they signed Kean Bryan on a free last month and are not short of options at the back.
The youngster needs to be playing week in, week out for his development to continue, and Valerien Ismael would have likely been able to offer him that in his system.
The youngster definitely does not have any regret remaining at Chelsea, though, as he is getting the opportunities.
While they are not as frequent as he would have loved, playing Premier League and Champions League football once in a while is surely more attractive than featuring in the Championship every week.
West Brom might have missed out on him last summer, but they could get a chance to sign him temporarily next summer if they find themselves back in the top-flight at the first time of asking.
With Chelsea always strengthening at the back, Chalobah could be available on loan, and being back in the top-flight will definitely boost the Baggies’ chances.
In other West Brom news, English striker has revealed that he came very close to Baggies move last summer.
