Steve Madeley: Ismael has selection headache ahead of Fulham clash
West Brom strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bristol City on Saturday, with the midfield duo of Jayson Molumby and Robert Snodgrass running the show.
Alex Mowatt and Jake Livermore were unavailable for selection, with the former still nursing a toe injury, while the latter missed the clash through suspension.
West Brom travel to Fulham next weekend, and with Valerien Ismael likely to have four midfielders available for the trip, The Athletic’s Steve Madeley reckons he faces a selection headache nobody saw coming.
The journalist wrote on their website: “Albion were fun to watch on Saturday. And their new-look central midfield duo played a crucial role.
“Should all four players be fit for the trip to west London, Ismael faces a genuine dilemma.”
Good news
The Frenchman would have been worried thinking about the possibility of not having Mowatt and Livermore available for some games a few weeks ago, but it is safe to say the Baggies did not miss any of the two midfielders on Saturday.
Snodgrass was only making his third Championship appearance of the season, but he put in an impressive shift in the middle of the park as he started and finished a game for the first time in many months.
He was at the heart of everything, winning possession 15 times – the most won in a single game by any West Brom midfielder so far in 2020-21.
Molumby also justified his inclusion in the starting XI, and Ismael now has four quality midfielders at his disposal for the rest of the campaign.
With 32 league games left to play in the season, West Brom need quality squad depth to keep their promotion chances alive, and that has been sorted out in the midfield department.f
A few attacking additions secured in the January transfer window, and the Baggies can be confident of playing Premier League football in 2022-23.
