Kevin Phillips reacts as Jordan Hugill scores first West Brom goal

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that Jordan Hugill scoring his first goal for West Brom is wonderful news for Valerien Ismael.

Along with Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson in the final third, it looks as though the competition is heating up at The Hawthorns.

Phillips believes that Hugill would have been “devastated” if he didn’t score, with a hat-trick going begging against Bristol City.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Phillips said, “I think it’s great that he has got off the mark.

“I think from Jordan’s point of view, to get the goal and he should have had a hat-trick at least, he would have been devastated if he had walked off the pitch and hadn’t scored.

“He will be high on confidence now, and I think from the managers point of view, having that player bang on confidence, there’s great competition.”

Headache.

Ismael will now be left scratching his head before tomorrow’s trip to Fulham in the Championship for the massive clash.

Hugill, Robinson and Grant have all found the back of the net now, although it’s the first two fighting for that central spot.

Grant has been shining on the left-hand side in that front three, and he will be one of the first names on the teamsheet right now.

Hugill will likely keep his spot after scoring his first goal, and we hope that his physicality is enough to disrupt the Fulham defence who will look to keep possession.

Time will tell, but hopefully, the striker can improve on that efficiency at Craven Cottage tomorrow afternoon.
