West Brom should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 win over Hull City at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night, according to Neil Lennon.

In the second half, Conor Townsend was brought down in the penalty area but referee Dean Whitestone didn't see anything wrong with the incident.

Ex-Celtic manager Lennon feels Richard Smallwood was lucky to have not seen his off-the-ball coming together with Townsend result in a spot-kick.

"They should've had a penalty," said Lennon on Sky Sports News on Wednesday night during the second period of the Championship fixture at The Hawthorns.

"After this, there's an incident where Townsend breaks, he gets away to [Matt] Phillips and he gets taken out by Smallwood off the ball.

"The referee didn't see it. They should've had a penalty for the foul on Townsend.

"There's a break in play at the minute for an injury to Smallwood but he's very fortunate not to have given a penalty away."

Unfortunate

Albion were the victims of woeful officiating at Fulham on Saturday when the London club was awarded a dodgy penalty that allowed them to open the scoring before a pathetic red card for Darnell Furlong.

And yet again, the EFL's horrific standard of refereeing was on show on Wednesday night against Hull.

Albion need to start playing well enough to stop relying on referees though.

We've been woeful for months now with just a handful of good performances throughout Valerien Ismael's time in charge.

Yes, we're getting wins and some fans will argue that getting three points on the board is more important than anything else.

We agree. But how many more games can we go playing the way we did against Hull before we start to really drop down the table?

Albion's away form, injury issues and likely lack of funding for the January transfer window spell more issues being on the horizon.
