Kevin Phillips hits back at Adrian Durham over talkSPORT rant on West Brom boss Valerien Ismael
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has hit back at Adrian Durham after the talkSPORT host branded Valerien Ismael’s style of play at West Brom as being similar to Tony Pulis’.
Albion are third in the Championship table after 14 games and while there have been some disappointing performances in the last couple of months, the wins are still rolling in and automatic promotion is very much a realistic target.
However, Ismael’s tactics have led to criticism from not only fans but also talkSPORT host Durham.
Earlier this month, the Peterborough-supporting broadcaster branded Ismael as “Tony Pulis with towels” due to what he thinks is a “garbage” way of playing football.
Durham added that if the Baggies win promotion and continue to play the same way in the Premier League, they will be “laughed out of it in no time at all” and will “be even worse than Norwich”.
Ex-West Brom striker Phillips completely disagrees with Durham’s rant on talkSPORT [18/10/21] and claims no one was talking down Ismael’s approach to management when he led Barnsley to the Championship play-offs last season because it’s all about results.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Adrian Durham said that? Ha.
“I don’t care what anyone says – whether it’s Adrian Durham or not – at the end of the day, it’s about results.
“ You can play the best football in the world and be mid-table but for a club like West Brom, you need to bounce back so it’s just about getting results.
“We saw it in the Birmingham game, it’s all about getting that win. Yes, they probably weren’t great on the night, it was a fairly even game at times but they did play some good stuff but it’s all about results.
“Everyone wants to see great football culminating in a win but unfortunately, only the best teams do that in the world. When you’re at the top of the Championship, results matter most, whether you like it or not.
“Don’t get me wrong, I like to watch nice football but at the end of the day, it’s about results and getting back to the Premier League. I disagree, I don’t think it’s terrible football.
“At times, they’ve played good football but again, it’s a new manager and he’s only had 14 games.
“They weren’t saying this about his Barnsley team, there were plaudits for them five months ago.
“It’s a new team, it takes time. I don’t buy it.”
