Jonathan Greening: West Brom style of play frustrating

West Brom are aiming to secure immediate promotion under Valerien Ismael, but most of the fans are not pleased with the side’s inconsistency and style.

The Frenchman’s direct style of play is not easy on the eyes, and while it has delivered results at times, former Baggies midfielder Jonathan Greening has confessed it has left him frustrated.

The Hawthorns outfit are currently third in the Championship table, and with automatic promotion still a possibility, he reckons the head coach must be doing something right.

Greening said (via Express and Star): “I was watching a game a few weeks back and Darnell Furlong was taking two minutes to get a towel and dry the ball for a throw-in, and I’m not going to lie, it was frustrating the life out of me.

“The West Brom fans like attacking football – good attacking football at a good speed. They like players who control the game and create lots of chances.

“Listen, at the end of the day, they’re third in the league, so I don’t think we can be too critical of the manager, because he’s clearly doing something right.”

Greening is definitely not alone in his assessment of Ismael’s system, and the 46-year-old would not have become Sam Allardyce’s successor if former sporting and technical director Luke Dowling was not sacked [The Athletic].

He wanted a manager with a style of play the fans would love, but Chief Executive Xu Ke opted for the Frenchman instead.

West Brom supporters are used to an attacking and exciting brand of football, but they are not going to be seeing anything similar to that under the former Barnsley boss.

With no plan B and an alternative playing style, the Baggies have sometimes struggled to create goalscoring chances and break opponents down, and that has led to boos from fans.

That has not changed anything, though, but all will be forgiven if promotion can be achieved.

Ismael has a lot of work to do if his side are to clinch automatic promotion, and he will be hoping his style can get the job done despite what the fans think about it.
