Kevin Phillips baffled by Neil Warnock comments about West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Kevin Phillips is baffled by Neil Warnock’s post-match comments after West Brom drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough at The Hawthorns this month.

Warnock was sacked by Boro after the match but sent a “parting shot” to the Baggies on talkSPORT when he suggested his now-former side played more football than Valerien Ismael’s did.

Ex-Albion striker Phillips can’t get his head around that jibe and pointed out how the Baggies dominated the stats to suggest Warnock is wrong.

“At the end of the day, it’s Neil Warnock, isn’t it? He’s going to go out and say what he feels but when you look at it, West Brom completely battered them,” Phillips told West Brom News.

In possession, 72 per cent to 28 per cent, had more shots, more shots on targets and more corners so I’m not sure where he’s got that from.

But that’s Neil Warnock and maybe he knew then that he was going to be walking so he had a little parting shot.

West Brom’s style of football has been criticised by certain pundits as well as fans this season.

Ismael’s tactics have resulted in Albion sitting third in the Championship table in mid-November but still, there are some who are concerned about the performances and the recent dip in form.

However, Phillips is simply happy to see the points keep ticking over despite the criticism levelled at Ismael.

At the end of the day, at this stage of the season where you’re going into Christmas, it’s just about getting results. No matter how – just get results,” he added.

Yes, we’d like to see silky football played that culminates in a win but it doesn’t work like that.

Teams come to The Hawthorns now and make it very, very hard for them, as Middlesbrough did, and you have to find a way to win the match.

West Brom didn’t get beaten but if anything, it’s just about getting results and finding ways to win matches.”

In other West Brom news, will Albion sack Valerien Ismael and bring in Daniel Farke?
