Don Goodman: West Brom need to sign 'powerhouse' Daryl Dike

West Brom transfer target Daryl Dike would be a “very wise signing” for Albion, according to former striker Don Goodman.

The 21-year-old is reportedly top of the club’s wish list for the January window following his spell at Valerien Ismael’s Barnsley last season.

Dike netted nine goals in 19 appearances on loan at Oakwell under Ismael, helping them reach the Championship playoffs.

He is now back at Orlando City, where he has scored seven goals in his last nine games in Major League Soccer.

On Sky Sports’ EFL Podcast, host Jonathan Oakes asked Goodman whether Dike was the sort of player that West Brom are missing.

“I think you can argue that point, for sure,” Goodman replied. “West Bromwich Albion haven’t got a Daryl Dike. They haven’t got that powerhouse.

“They’ve got Jordan Hugill who is powerful in the air, but in terms of dynamism and mobility maybe Daryl Dike just offers that little bit more.

“Managers like players that they’ve worked with and that they trust. I think that would be a very wise signing for West Bromwich Albion if they got the opportunity to make that happen.”

Much-needed firepower

We’re in complete agreement with Goodman that Dike would be the perfect fit for West Brom if they manage to sign him.

His goalscoring record in MLS is very encouraging and you only need to look at the impact he had at Barnsley last season to see how he can make a difference in the Championship.

The Baggies need a new out-and-out centre forward, as top scorer Karlan Grant is deployed on the wing and Jordan Hugill’s loan spell has not worked out so far.

This is particularly vital as promotion rivals Bournemouth and Fulham are spearheaded by two of the division’s top marksmen in Dominic Solanke and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

As Dike has worked under Valerien Ismael previously, West Brom will hope that that could give them an advantage over other teams interested in him, such as Crystal Palace.
