West Brom could be recalling Josh Griffiths over Sam Johnstone exit fears - pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
West Brom may be getting ready to terminate Josh Griffiths’ loan deal at Lincoln to prepare themselves for Sam Johnstone’s exit in January, according to Kevin Phillips.
LincolnshireLive has reported that Albion could recall 20-year-old goalkeeper Griffiths from his loan spell at Sincil Bank in January.
England shot-stopper Johnstone, 28, has been strongly linked with a move away from The Hawthorns with his contract due to expire in the summer.
And Phillips, speaking exclusively to West Brom News, has suggested that Griffiths may be brought back from Lincoln due to fears over Johnstone moving on.
When asked if Griffiths returning means Johnstone is on his way, Phillips said: “Possibly but he could also be getting called back just so he can go somewhere else. You just don’t know.
“Generally, when you get called back, it could be for cover.
“Sam Johnstone might not have any intention to leave the club and I’m sure the club will not be intending to get rid of him. But you’d leave yourself short if it did happen.
“Sam’s been linked with a lot of clubs so it could possibly happen.
“It’ll be a cautious decision to bring Griffiths back, just in case Johnstone does leave.”
Johnstone has reportedly attracted attention from numerous clubs amid his good form at West Brom and for the England national team.
If he does go in January, Valerien Ismael has David Button and Alex Palmer to bump up the pecking order before Griffiths enters the picture.
Griffiths is on a season-long loan at Lincoln but LicolnshireLive has reported that the Baggies refused Michael Appleton permission to play him in their FA Cup win over Bowers & Pitsea to stop him from being cup-tied.
In other West Brom news, will Albion sack Ismael and bring in Daniel Farke?
