Kevin Phillips expects West Brom to sign 'one or two' new players in January after Ismael udpate
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips expects to see Valerien Ismael bolster his squad in the January transfer window by signing a couple of new players.
Albion’s transfer business in the summer was reduced to signing players as free agents or striking loan deals.
Bournemouth and especially Fulham, who are currently sat first and second respectively in the Championship standings, splashed millions on new signings.
Valerien Ismael has been quoted by the Birmingham Mail this month as saying plans are already being made for the upcoming January transfer window.
And despite the frugal summer, Phillips feels the Baggies may have the money in their bank balance to bring in a couple of new signings to help bolster Ismael’s squad.
Speaking to West Brom News, he said: “It’ll be difficult because financially, Bournemouth and Fulham have got more funds available.
“You’d like to think that with West Brom coming down [from the Premier League], there’d be funds available to strengthen.
“I’m sure Ismael would like to bring in one or two players who are not just going to challenge but maybe players who can start to make the side really strong.
“At the minute, it’s looking like they’re playing second fiddle the top two because it looks like there’s no catching them.
“They’ll be hard to catch but one way to deal with that is to bring in one or two who can strengthen squad.
“At some point this season, Bournemouth and Fulham will have a blip – every team does. It’s just whether West Brom can capitalise on that.
“They can’t afford to have any more injuries so January will be really important. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.”
In other West Brom news, this player could have his loan deal terminated in January amid speculation.
