West Brom-linked Tom Lawrence speaks out on transfer speculation
West Brom target Tom Lawrence has commented on transfer speculation linking him with a Derby County exit.
The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday night that the Rams were willing to let the Wales forward leave Pride Park for free in January as they look to cut costs as part of their ongoing administration process.
The Baggies were named as one of four Championship clubs interested in signing Lawrence, along with Bournemouth, Stoke City and Swansea City.
However, the 27-year-old has said he does not want to leave Derby but admits the future isn’t set in stone.
Speaking via the Derby Telegraph, he said: “For me to leave in January it would have to be for the benefit of the club, and for me, otherwise there would be no point in me leaving.
“I want to see the season out here, but I don’t know what can happen in the future.
“I am out of contract and so are many other lads here, so we are all kind of not knowing what is going to go on.
“Obviously all the lads want to sort their future out but we are in the position we are in, we all knew we were going to be in the last year of our contracts but we have to do a professional job and keeping putting in performances, like we have been doing.”
An admirable stance
As Derby captain, Lawrence is leading by example and ensuring that all the players stick together in the club’s hour of need; he is not going to express a desire to leave to add to the club’s woes.
However, the decision may be taken out of his hands in January as the club need to desperately generate funds and according to the Daily Mail, Lawrence is their highest earner on £37,000 per week.
Getting him off the wage bill would “benefit the club”, as the forward puts it, but we suspect he means he would want Derby to receive a transfer fee if he departs. That seems unlikely, considering his contract expires at the end of the season.
If the Rams do ask for a fee though, that may rule West Brom out of the running as the Baggies showed in the summer that they are reluctant to spend any money at the moment.
In other West Brom news, Steve Madeley has named two players who are likely to leave the club in the near future.
