Valerien Ismael reveals why Callum Robinson didn't feature against Huddersfield

West Brom manager Valerien Ismael has explained why Callum Robinson was not brought on as a substitute against Huddersfield on Saturday.

With the Baggies down to 10 men following Jake Livermore’s red card and trailing 1-0, Ismael made his final change by bringing off Matt Phillips. But instead of introducing forward Robinson, he played defender Darnell Furlong who went into the midfield.

The decision baffled supporters, particularly as it limited the team’s attacking threat and they failed to find an equaliser in the final 10 minutes.

Speaking after the game [via BirminghamLive], Ismael revealed his thinking behind the substitution.

“We had one problem with Alex Mowatt,” he said. “He came back from a long injury and we knew he might have to be changed so this was the thought behind it.

“For sure we would have liked to play with Robbo but we have another game on Tuesday so we have to manage this.

“We wanted to put Robbo in but come the red card we had to change the game plan so this situation is due to the comeback from Alex because that took one change from the three possibilities.”

Doesn’t make sense

This isn’t really an explanation that stacks up. Ismael’s first two substitutions are fair enough – Grady Diangana was on a yellow card and Alex Mowatt was coming back from injury – but that isn’t what is being called into question here.

Ismael was clearly worried about West Brom being left too open in midfield following Livermore’s red card, but the reality is that Huddersfield never looked like pushing for a second goal. They were happy to sit on their lead.

Therefore, the Baggies needed to bring on another attacker to put pressure on the Terriers defence. But with Phillips going off and makeshift midfielder Furlong coming on, Karlan Grant was left as the only threat in the final third.

With West Brom in danger of falling even further behind Fulham and Bournemouth in the Championship table, Ismael needed to throw caution to the wind and go all out for an equaliser.

Instead, his cautious approach cost the Baggies and they have now picked up just one win from their last four games.
