Kevin Phillips raves about Sam Johnstone after what he heard about West Brom goalkeeper
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Sam Johnstone after the West Brom goalkeeper shone in the 0-0 draw with Blackpool earlier this week.
On Tuesday night, Baggies fans were left frustrated with yet another dull performance but one highlight was the display of Johnstone, 28, in goals.
The England international pulled off a stunning double save just before half-time and while Phillips didn’t see it himself, he’s reserved big praise for the shot-stopper for helping his former club avoid defeat.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “I was working down in London so I didn’t get to see the highlights but I heard about it because one of the lads [I was with] was covering the game.
“You know how I feel about Sam Johnstone. Every now and then he might have a mistake in him but generally, his shot-stopping is fantastic.
“You don’t get in the England squad if you don’t have anything about you and he’s certainly been showing that.
“He’s proven his worth in a time where West Brom can’t be affording to drop points because it looks like the top-two are running away with it at the moment. They’ve dropped points lately but they’re still pulling away so West Brom can’t afford to drop points if they want to challenge.
“Sam Johnstone is an integral part of that and he showed it again against Blackpool.”
Johnstone has kept nine clean sheets in his 19 Championship appearances for the Baggies this season.
His contract situation is yet to be sorted out by the club with his existing terms due to expire next summer.
It’s likely that he’ll attract attention in January based on his future availability and the fact that he’s had such a stellar season and a half at The Hawthorns.
In other West Brom news, Phillips is baffled by this “farcical” announcement about a Baggies player.
