Newcastle United are keen on West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone
Newcastle United are keen on a move for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.
The Magpies want a new goalie as they look to hold on to their Premier League status, and they are also keeping tabs on Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha.
Johnstone, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season, but the Baggies could be open to cashing in on him in January if suitors table a very juicy bid for his services [Daily Mail].
Calciomercato did not specify when exactly Newcastle want the England international, but their interest is most likely going to be towards a January deal, and they have cash to spend.
Eddie Howe took over from Steve Bruce in order to help keep the side up, and their wealthy Saudi owners will be more than ready to back him when the winter transfer window opens.
Johnstone made the most saves in the Premier League last term, and it would not be surprising if the Toon boss is a fan.
West Brom will not be keen on weakening their side midway through the campaign, but with the goalie yet to sign a new deal, a very good offer from Newcastle could force their hands if he wants the move.
20th-placed Magpies are favourites to get relegated, and the Baggies ace will be taking a huge risk if he opts to join them in January.
Johnstone is not likely to be short of suitors once the next transfer window opens, and he has a huge choice to make.
