West Brom may struggle to sign Keinan Davis because Steven Gerrard is a big fan

West Brom may see their hopes of signing Keinan Davis dashed by Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard, according to The Athletic.

Steve Madeley suggested yesterday (30 November) that the 23-year-old was a potential Albion target for the January transfer window.

However, his colleague Gregg Evans has now suggested that Davis may stay at Villa Park because “Steven Gerrard is understood to be a big fan, having considered signing him at former club Rangers”.

Evans added that the striker is “highly sought after” by Championship clubs, but that a move right now “seems unlikely”.

Bullet dodged?

West Brom should certainly be on the lookout for a new striker in January as they have been severely lacking firepower this season.

While Fulham and Bournemouth have seen their promotion bids spearheaded by Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dominic Solanke, Albion have not had a centre forward they can rely upon.

Top scorer Karlan Grant tends to play more on the left hand side, while Norwich City loanee Jordan Hugill has netted just once so far this season.

As the Baggies are unlikely to be willing to spend much money in January, a loan move for a player like Davis could be the solution to their attacking woes.

However, missing out on the Villa striker might not be such a bad thing. Aside from the fact that he currently plays for a Midlands rival, the 23-year-old has only scored six goals in 86 appearances in his senior career.

That does not inspire you with confidence and does not suggest that Davis is the man to drive the Baggies back to the Premier League.
