Jonathan Greening discusses key West Brom figure's future

Jonathan Greening doesn’t believe that Valerien Ismael has that long left as West Brom manager.

Speaking to My Betting Sites [via Birmingham Mail], the former Baggies man tore into the Frenchman for his style of football and aired the frustrations of fans.

West Brom have only scored two goals in their past six matches, and it appears as if Greening has had enough.

He said: “Valérien Ismael is under pressure at West Brom, not necessarily for their current run of results, but because of the style of football being played.

“It’s very direct, long-ball football straight into the box. The Baggies fans prefer the ball on the ground, with an attacking style.

“One victory in five games won’t help his situation. They were in an excellent place [with their league position], and now Bournemouth and Fulham are flying, and it’s theirs to lose.

“They have to turn it around quickly. Several players are underperforming.

“They need to get the big players back, performing and scoring goals. That’s how they’ll get the fans back on side.”

Harsh but fair from Greening.

Ultimately, the Baggies are still up there, but the top two are miles away now, and it appears as if they are going to have to settle for a play-off spot.

Many fans are unhappy with the style of play, but Ismael’s prefered formation and tactics have created plenty of chances.

The Baggies just don’t have someone who can regularly stick the ball away, which is where they are falling behind.

Fulham have Aleksandr Mitrovic, who has scored 21 goals already while Dominic Solanke has bagged 15 for Bournemouth.

West Brom’s top goalscorer is Karlan Grant on eight, which is good, but it isn’t enough.

If the board back Ismael in January, perhaps he will be able to get the striker that he craves and someone who could improve the team massively.

Until then, though, West Brom might continue to struggle, and the fans might just have to stick by the team and the manager and hope the board act in January.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies want to sign a 144-goal striker in January.
