Keith Hackett shares verdict on Cedric Kipre goal for West Brom v Coventry

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom...

Keith Hackett has insisted that it was “amazing” that Cedric Kipre’s goal was allowed to stand as West Brom beat Coventry 2-1.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, the ex-Premier League referee admitted that there was no way the officials could have seen it in the crowded area.

Mark Robins argued live on Sky Sports after the game that Kipre had effectively punched the ball into the net.

The former FIFA-listed official believes that if people want more accuracy in lower-leagues, VAR has to be introduced.

“It should have been disallowed.

“Under the law, he’s effectively scored using his arm and hand, so that goal should have been disallowed. Amazing that they haven’t got VAR.

“The players are covering him, this is an incident where the referee hasn’t seen it and people need to understand that if they want a greater degree of accuracy in the Championship, VAR has got to be introduced.

“You can’t afford for goals of that nature to be scored.”

No complaints.

This is the perfect example of one of those goals that you only complain about if it goes against your side.

Of course, if this was Coventry that got the rub of the green and this goal given, we all would have been raging in the stands and watching at home.

Given the financial difficulties in the lower leagues compared to the Premier League though, it is hard to imagine VAR being introduced.

There is a huge gulf in finances, and many of these teams cannot afford to maintain that sort of technology every single year.
