Kevin Phillips raves about Josh Windass as Sheffield Wednesday star is linked with West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns

Kevin Phillips is a fan of Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass but doesn’t think he’d be the right buy for West Brom in January.

According to Football League World, Albion have sent scouts to watch the 27-year-old forward while Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City and Hull City have done the same.

It is understood that the Baggies are in pursuit of a new forward ahead of the January transfer window opening but Phillips wants a natural striker, rather than someone who sits deeper like Windass.

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “He’s a good player, I’ve watched him a handful of times. He’s a goalscorer and he’s a creator as well.

Is he that player who’ll get you 10 or 12 goals between January and the end of the season to get you promoted? Maybe.

They do have players in that area who give you creativity so I’d actually like to see that out-and-out goalscorer.

When I look at the front three, they’re all kind of similar. If they could get a goalscorer in, that could be the difference.

Windass is a good player but I don’t think he would come and get the goals to help West Brom win promotion.”

Windass has had his appearances this season limited by injury but has still managed to impress in recent weeks.

The ex-Rangers attacker has scored two goals and supplied one assist in his only three League One appearances for Darren Moore’s Sheffield Wednesday side this season.

In other West Brom news, Phillips wants Albion to sign this available Arsenal player in January.
