Chris Lepkowski blames Valerien Ismael for West Brom recent woes
Chris Lepkowski has insisted that Valerien Ismael has not improved West Brom players since becoming head coach in the summer, blaming him for the side’s poor form.
The Baggies suffered their fifth defeat of the 2021-22 Championship campaign at the hands of Derby County at Pride Park today (27 December), and the former Birmingham Mail journalist was not pleased with what he saw, taking to his personal Twitter account to react.
Ismael slammed his players for the woeful performance, but Lepkowski believes the Frenchman should be the one shouldering all the blame.
He said: “Appreciate the limitations of this West Brom side, but also struggle to see any progress.
“Big part of coaching is improving players, improving a team.
“Any WBA head coach has to know how to manage upwards. Not sure VI is doing any of these things. Feels like an existence right now.”
Lepkowski also reacted to Ismael’s quote: “…same picture week in, week out…?”
“When you’re in charge of the paints, palette and canvas, you create your own picture. It’s on you.”
Players are meant to improve under managers, but the same cannot be said of the Baggies stars.
It is difficult to point at the progress, individually or collectively, made since the Frenchman took over, and that has to change.
Albion still do not have a plan B, and it is easy for most teams to frustrate them.
The Hawthorns outfit need to bolster their squad in the January transfer window indeed, but the current crop of players are capable of doing much more than they are doing at the moment.
Another head coach will conveniently get the best out of some of these players, and the former Barnsley boss is simply failing to do that.
He should take responsibility for his side’s shortcomings, and it is up to him to make necessary amendments and adjustments on the training ground.
West Brom have managed to somehow keep themselves in the promotion discussion despite being largely underwhelming so far, and things have to improve in the second half of the season.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
