Carlton Palmer: West Brom should terminate Jordan Hugill's loan in January

Carlton Palmer has urged West Brom to end Jordan Hugill’s loan when the January transfer window opens, insisting it has not worked.

The Norwich City striker arrived at The Hawthorns on a season-long deal in the summer, but he has managed to find the back of the net just once.

Valerien Ismael is looking to strengthen the striking department next month in a bid to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League, and Palmer has told Give Me Sport that he also needs to show Hugill the exit door.

The former Baggies ace said: “Well, he’s scored one goal, so it’s not worked out for either party in terms of goals. His work-rate, his endeavour and his effort has been fantastic, but what they need is goals, so for both parties it frees up money.

“They need a proven goalscorer, they’re creating loads of chances, they’re getting restarts, they’re getting set pieces, they just need to convert. It’s not worked out, so for all parties it’s the right time for him to go back.”

A return of a solitary strike in 20 Championship games is very poor, and Hugill’s loan spell has not gone as West Brom would have wished.

The former West Ham man scored 13 goals in 39 league games for Queen Park Rangers in 2019-20 and did bag 20 goals across his two seasons at Preston North End, but his form over the last 18 months has not been impressive.

He could only find the back of the net four times in 31 games for Norwich City last season, and it appears rediscovering his old form is not possible for him playing with the Baggies.

Albion need someone capable of firing them up, and Hugill is clearly not the one.

They have failed to score in six of their last 10 games, and that has to change in the second half of the campaign if they want to be playing Premier League football in 2022.

Freeing up Hugill’s wages for a new signing will be a good way to start, and West Brom need to get that decision right this time around.

Ismael needs a consistent goalscorer, and while there is no cash to splash on one, they can land a quality one on loan if they know where to look.
