Kevin Phillips reacts to ‘stonewall’ West Brom penalty shout v Cardiff
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has insisted that West Brom should have had a “stonewall” penalty in their 1-1 draw against Cardiff City.
Conor Townsend was pulled down in the dying moments of the game, an incident that caused chaos after being waved away by officials.
The ex-Baggies talisman shared that the only thing that could have gone against the Albion was how Townsend fell to the floor.

“It’s a stonewall penalty,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“He’s gone down a little bit easy, but nevertheless, when the balls goes in behind you, a defender, you could just hear him scrambling to do everything he could to stop him going through on goal.
“It’s just clear, you can see the hands all over him. The referee’s positioning, the defender had his back towards the referee.
“He maybe thought he made the most of it, but when you see all the angles that we’re lucky enough to watch, it’s a penalty – simple as that.”

Stunned.
We were just as stunned as Phillips was.
Townsend may go down with his arms in the air, but what else can you do to earn a penalty? If you don’t go down, the decision isn’t given.
Inconsistency in the EFL is at an all-time high, with decisions seeming to get worst as each week passes, no matter who is in charge.
Valerien Ismael had every right to be angry, although he may not come out of that end-of-pitch melee without a charge.
