Ex-FIFA official: Jake Livermore should be stripped of West Brom captaincy

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom...

Keith Hackett wants Jake Livermore to be stripped of his captaincy at West Brom due to the club’s ongoing disciplinary issues.

Valerien Ismael has seen his side collect six red cards in their last 12 matches after Cedric Kipre was sent off in the FA Cup loss to Brighton at teh weekend.

Livermore, 32, has been part of the problem and was himself sent off in the 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield on 20 November.

Ex-Premier League referee Hackett has suggested ways that West Brom can sort out their red card woes and has highlighted the captain as someone who can help fix it.

Speaking to West Brom News, Hackett said: “I think sometimes that players need to be reminded of what they can do and what they cannot do.

With a series of video clips, I’ve done it in the past, you can go through and it’s not a four-hour session, this takes about 30 minutes. ‘This is going to always be punished by referees, you can’t do this, this is why you can’t launch yourself off the field of play’.

What is the benefit to the team when you’re being sent off for two yellow cards? Where’s the captain? Can the captain influence that and have a calming influence?

The other aspect is if they don’t want a referee anywhere near the camp, then he can bring a sports psychologist in to do the same because this is about effective self-management.”

When told that Livermore was one of the players to be sent off this season, the former FIFA official added: “I’d be tempted to take the captaincy off him because he’s not setting a good example”

In 178 appearances for West Brom, Livermore has been sent off four times.

One of those was when he was shown a straight red card last season in a defeat to Aston Villa during Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge.

He was eventually frozen out of the side by Big Sam when he signed Okay Yokuslu and Ainsley Maitland-Niles to step in for the ex-Hull midfielder.

However, since relegation to the Championship and Ismael was appointed manager, Livermore has become a mainstay of the Albion midfield once more and his captaincy upheld.

In other West Brom news, this player was dubbed “stupid” by a Sky Sports pundit in the loss to Brighton.
