Ismael provides fitness update on West Brom striker Daryl Dike
West Brom fans can expect to see Daryl Dike in a Baggies shirt soon with his fitness schedule coming along nicely, according to Valerien Ismael.
The 21-year-old American has been put on a four-week fitness plan to ready him for a return to Championship-level football ahead of his West Brom debut.
Even though he isn’t yet up to speed with his new teammates, the wide expectation is that he will play against Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.
“At the minute Daryl Dike is on his own programme – we have a four-week plan for him,” Ismael said, as quoted by the Express and Star.
“The first week he had been doing individual training with our sports science department to make sure that he had a good build-up.
“This week he is training with the team with the purpose of building him up for the game at QPR.
“He’s at a good level. He played with consistency last year and last season.”
West Brom need Dike to be ready and firing as soon as possible but they must be cautious to not rush the USA international.
There is a real possibility that if Dike is rushed into the starting XI for the QPR game this weekend, he could pull up injured and then leave Ismael back at square one again.
Alternatively, if he is slowly bedded in, getting more minutes off the bench before eventually starting further down the line, he should be able to build his fitness more reasonably.
It is ultimately a game of chance, West Brom really need his goal-scoring ability but not at the cost of injuring him before he has found his stride.
For the QPR game at least, Karlan Grant may be the smarter option to lead the line.
