Andy Carrol set for West Brom medical today – John Percy

West Brom are set to make their second signing of the January transfer window with Andy Carroll due for a medical today at the Hawthorns, according to Telegraph journalist John Percy.

The 33-year-old spent the first half of this season at Reading on a short-term deal where he scored twice in eight games.

Valerien Ismael has moved to bring the former England international to the club with a long-term injury to Daryl Dike causing an unwanted headache for the Baggies boss.

Percy broke the news on Twitter saying: “Andy Carroll is set for a medical at #wba this morning. Carroll available as a free agent after contract expired at Reading. West Brom have moved after the injury to January signing Daryl Dike”

A perfect alternative

Carroll might not be the most aesthetically pleasing player to watch but there is no questioning his effectiveness at what he does.

As an out and out target man, there is arguably no better player in world football and he is not a player any defender will enjoy playing against.

West Brom

And he still has that eye for goal that saw Liverpool spend £35milion on him in 2011.

He scored perhaps the greatest disallowed brace for Reading earlier this season with an overhead kick and a 30-yeard volley both ruled out for offside.

West Brom fans will understandably prefer Dike or even Karlan Grant to lead the line but Carroll may be their best chance of promotion this season if he can hit the form he has shown he is capable of.

In other West Brom news, 90% of fans are in agreement over Ismael’s future at the club after a fan poll was conducted.
