Kevin Phillips shares instant reaction to West Brom giving Steve Bruce job

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has shared his instant reaction to West Brom handing their job to Steve Bruce on Thursday evening.

The ex-Baggies talisman has urged the former Newcastle man to change his philosophy to bring attacking football back to The Hawthorns.

Bruce has been given an 18-month deal and has already admitted that promotion to the Premier League is his only job.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“The West Brom fans, they’ve had to watch some tough games this year, we’ve all associated West Brom with free-flowing attacking football and that’s what they have been used to, it hasn’t happened a lot this season.

“Steve to come in, maybe he has to change the philosophy to be more attacking because he was labelled as more a defensive person at Newcastle, which I thought was harsh. No surprise.”

Bring the Baggies back.

This is all we want, with our style seeming to disappear over the past few handfuls of months at The Hawthorns.

Ismael delivered that clearly in his first few games, but the Frenchman suffered from stubbornness to change, and that cost him his job.

Bruce has to pick up his troops quickly, and telling them to go out and press themselves in the final third could just do the trick.

This is the biggest period in our recent history, with instant promotion back to the Premier League meaning everything.

If it fails, this last seven months has been a complete failure.

In other West Brom news, an ex-Albion midfielder instantly reacted to the news of Ismael’s dismissal on Wednesday.
