Ones to watch as West Brom take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate

By James Evans

Steve Bruce’s West Brom side will be looking to follow up their impressive win against leaders Fulham with a win against Bristol City.

The Baggies travel to Bristol knowing that they’re in a battle to reach the final playoff spot as the side look to get back into the Premier League.

Bruce’s side are coming off of Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Championship leaders Fulham. A second-half strike from Callum Robinson was enough to earn all three points.

As for Bristol City, Nigel Pearson’s men suffered a defeat on the road against Barnsley. Currently, City sit 18th in the league standings.

With the end of the season just around the corner, The Baggies are six points off sixth-placed Queens Park Rangers. Following their poor start to 2022, Bruce’s men have started to pick up some crucial wins.

Heading into this weekend’s Championship showdown, here are a few key players from both teams that could steal the show.

Ones to Watch: Bristol City vs West Brom:

Andreas Weimann (Bristol City)

With 17 goals this season, City’s Andreas Weimann has been instrumental in their battle to stay up this season. Only Ben Brereton Díaz, Dominic Solanke and Aleksandar Mitrovic have scored more goals in the league than Weimann.

The former Premier League forward is without a shadow of a doubt City’s ‘player of the season.’ His contribution has been unrivalled.

If Pearson’s side stand a chance of picking up all three points this weekend, then they will need Weimann firing on all fronts.

Karlan Grant (West Brom)

The Baggies have struggled to consistently find the back of the net. Karlan Grant is West Brom’s top scorer in the league with 13 goals. Besides Robinson, who has scored seven league goals, no other Baggies player has more than five league goals.

With Bruce still potentially having at least one eye on the playoffs, then they will need Grant on form heading into the key fixtures.

After signing from Huddersfield, Grant has struggled to really establish some consistency. However, the forward has featured regularly this season and will be aiming to end the season on a high.

Alex Scott (Bristol City)

At 18 years of age, Alex Scott is not only one to watch in this weekend’s showdown, but is certainly one for the future. Scott has already featured regularly in England’s youth set up.

With four goals and two assists in the league this season, the Englishman continues to impress the Bristol faithful.

His versatility has proved to be a real eye-catcher this season. With Scott capable of playing out wide, in midfield and as a wingback, The Baggies will have to be wary of Scott’s presence this weekend.

Darnell Furlong (West Brom)

With four assists in all competitions this season, Darnell Furlong will be a key player in this weekend’s league showdown. Both City and West Brom like to operate with wingbacks in their system.

Therefore, Furlong’s role will be crucial this weekend. Pearson’s Bristol side have conceded 67 times this season, the third-most in the league.

Furlong will expect to have a lot of joy down the right-hand side at Ashton Gate. It is likely that he will be facing Jay Dasilva. So, it could be the battle of the wingbacks as West Brom look to make it two wins from two.
