Kevin Phillips shares West Brom playoff chances after last-gasp draw v Bristol City

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips still believes that West Brom will still find it really difficult to reach the Championship playoffs this season.

The ex-Baggies talisman insisted that the win over Fulham and the last-gasp draw with Bristol City show that the Albion are still pushing hard.

Phillips admitted that once the hope goes within the squad, they will simply stand “no chance” of hitting the top six.

“As much as I would like to see it, there has been that inconsistency, so why would all of a sudden would they pick it up in the final 10 games,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“When you’re chasing, the pressure is on, it’s very difficult. Beating Fulham and then scoring that late equaliser [v Bristol City], there is always a chance, but you’re relying on other people to drop points, and when you get to this stage of the season, it becomes very difficult.

“I would say, it’s probably a big task to get into the playoffs, but you can never give up hope, if you do give up hope, you’ve got no chance.”

Slim.

Adam Reach’s last-gasp goal at Ashton Gate was no doubt big, but the Baggies are in a position where they need to win every game.

The victory and performance against Fulham show they can do that, but the consistency has not been there all season.

Steve Bruce will be left scratching his head that things can change in the space of a few days, and that has been the biggest issue all season.

Time is running out, and it still looks like a long shot for the Albion to launch a late push for those playoffs – we hope we’re proved wrong.
