Kevin Phillips: International break is blessing in disguise for Callum Robinson and West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that the international break is a blessing in disguise for West Brom attacker Callum Robinson.

The ex-Baggies talisman believes that the striker always rises to the occasion with the Republic of Ireland, and that can only help the Albion for the rest of the season.

Robinson will likely lead the line in games over the next week, starting against Belgium in Dublin on Saturday evening [26 March].

“When your manager sends a player away on international duty, they always wish them their best,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“If they haven’t been playing well, go and find some form in your training and your games.

“Try not to get injured and you come back ready to go and you’ve found a bit of form so they can be a blessing in disguise, players find it comfortable when they go away on international duty and rise to the occasion – Robinson is definitely one of those.

“If he can do that in the next couple of games then it can only benefit Steve Bruce and the squad if he comes back full of confidence and hopefully takes it into the remainder of the season.”

Blessing.

Robinson has not been in the worst of form, but certainly not the best either this season, with his goal against Fulham the latest highlight.

Having said that, it all changes when he goes away with his country, as he finds the net for fun no matter who the opponent.

The striker has scored six goals in his past four outings for the Republic of Ireland, and another profitable week would no doubt please Steve Bruce.

Having a fully firing partnership between Robinson and Karlan Grant would be huge, and it would certainly set up a massive push for those playoffs.

Bring it on.
