Kevin Phillips: Critical decisions go against West Brom again in loss v Birmingham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that West Brom will be majorly frustrated that they didn’t get a penalty against Birmingham.

The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that it is a bitter pill to swallow, with consistency from the officials a real issue yet again.

Darnell Furlong’s long throw in the opening minutes was clearly punched away in a melee, yet it wasn’t seen by the referee.

“When decisions go against you like that, it’s critical if they want to get into the playoffs,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“They need to win football matches, and when you get decisions like that, it can be hard to take, a bitter pill to swallow. It’s a tough one to take, at this point, you just want the consistency from the referee to make the right call, we’ve seen it so many times this season.

“It’s frustrating, and it’s at a stage of the season where they can’t afford to drop points.”

How on earth was this missed?

We can talk about missing the playoffs due to our shocking form, but these big calls continue to go against the Baggies.

Consistency from the officials is a complaint of basically every side in the Championship, so it needs to be looked at sooner rather than later.

Steve Bruce will be fuming inside, but he also knows that he will need to get more from his side so they don’t need to rely on moments like this.
