Steve Bruce will be disappointed as Conor Townsend penalised for West Brom v Birmingham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that Steve Bruce will be “really disappointed” at the penalty that saw Birmingham beat West Brom.

The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that when your luck isn’t in, decisions such as that always appear to go against you.

The Albion were denied a clear penalty for handball before Conor Townsend was penalised himself later in the game.

“That’s what happens when you don’t get the rub of the green,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“When you hit bad luck, it just seems that those types of decisions, you don’t get them, and then they go against you, that’s a classic example. It’s the consistency, as a manager now, you just ask for good decisions.

“I can imagine that Lee Bowyer will be delighted and Steve Bruce will be really disappointed in the decision as it cost his team.”

Bruce isn’t in the game of making excuses, but when clear errors such as these are made, what else can you do?

The Townsend handball isn’t the problem, it is the clear handball that Birmingham got away with – the defender basically punched it.

If Bruce speaks out, he likely gets fined but how on earth that wasn’t spotted was embarrassing.
