Kevin Phillips: West Brom have perfect chance to sign two new goalkeepers with double exit mooted

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted it would not be ideal for West Brom to lose Sam Johnstone and David Button this summer.

The ex-Baggies talisman did admit, however, that it could be a chance to bring in a couple of fresh faces at The Hawthorns.

The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley reported this week that both Johnstone and Button could leave this summer.

“It’s not ideal,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“I think we all knew that Johnstone would probably go, so that’s no surprise. But, for Button to go as well, that would be a concern, because you’d like one of your experienced goalkeepers to stay.

“Again, it could be a little bit of a rebuilding process, bring some fresh faces in, it might be just what they need to mount a challenge next season. In an ideal world, you’d like to keep one of them, but we don’t live in that and players want to move on.

“It’s a chance to freshen it up and bring in a couple of fresh faces.”

It all depends on how Bruce views things in his current squad.

This isn’t a side that he put together and transfers will be expected if he sticks around past the summer into next season.

Alex Palmer could get a chance to permanently nail down a spot in the first-team squad should both of those above him leave.

Having said that, an experienced goalkeeper will surely be targeted, although not much money may be available.

Time will tell if two new faces are needed in that department.
