West Brom have six weeks to inform Romaine Sawyers of major contract decision – report

West Brom have six weeks to inform Romaine Sawyers if they will activate the extension clause in his contract, according to The Athletic.

Currently, on loan at Stoke, the contract of the 30-year-old runs out with the Baggies this summer, but he could be sticking around.

Steve Bruce is a fan of Sawyers and has been watching him closely despite not yet making a decision on his future.

Writing in his latest column for The Athletic, Steve Madeley shared the latest coming from The Hawthorns.

“Romaine Sawyers is out of contract at the end of the season so the 30-year-old, who is ineligible to face his full-time employers, would be an easy player to offload,” he wrote.

“But Albion have an option to extend the former Brentford midfielder’s deal by an extra year.

“Sawyers is waiting to discover that decision, happy to return, content to remain at Stoke and unsure yet whether he will get the offer to do either.

“Albion have until the third week of May to inform the ex-Walsall midfielder of their intentions, after which Stoke might well have their own decision to make.”

Really?

These are the types of deals that are still haunting us at The Hawthorns, and you have to know when to cut ties and let go.

Jake Livermore is already sticking around next season, and with Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby in midfield, there is enough experience there.

If there was another signing made in that area, it would be a goalscoring option who can really add something to the side by hitting double-figure goal involvements.

Sawyers doesn’t do anything different to what Mowatt or Livermore do, so it would be a strange decision to keep him around.

Bruce has made it clear he wants to stick around, but he has to take things in a new direction after the failure of this season.

Keeping Sawyers certainly wouldn’t be changing things up.
