West Brom talks remain for David Button, reloctation set for debate – Steve Madeley

West Brom still have fresh talks to attend with David Button before a decision is made on his future beyond this season.

That’s according to Steve Madeley of The Athletic, who reports that a house relocation may be part of any new deal for the keeper.

Button still has a family home in Brighton, so basing himself much closer to the midlands may be a condition in any new contract.

Writing for The Athletic on Monday morning [11 April], Madeley shared what to expect from more talks.

“There remains talking to be done with Button, who is also out of contract at the end of the season,” he wrote.

“The 33-year-old, who has made 178 Championship appearances for six different clubs and won promotion with Fulham four years ago, still has his family home on the south coast from his days as a Brighton player in 2018-20, so basing himself entirely closer to Albion’s training ground in the Midlands is likely to be a condition of any new deal.

“If no agreement can be reached, either financially or on other terms, a new goalkeeper will be sought to compete with Palmer.”

Smart?

With Sam Johnstone now inevitable to leave, it would be smart to make sure that another experienced keeper doesn’t head out for nothing.

Button hasn’t played much, but having him around with the likes of Alex Palmer could be a smart decision.

The likes of Josh Griffiths could be deemed too inexperienced for a big role in the Championship, so another loan is likely for him.

Should Button follow Johnstone out of The Hawthorns, a new keeper is needed, that is guaranteed.

Hopefully, this potential relocation isn’t a dealbreaker, as, after all, it makes sense for the keeper to be closer to the midlands.

Much could depend on the future of Steve Bruce, who may have a different point of view compared to a potential new manager.

Time will tell.
