Kevin Phillips: Steve Bruce will be pulling hair out at West Brom defending, new signings needed

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that Steve Bruce will be pulling his hair out at the “terrible” West Brom defending in recent weeks.

The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that the defence is an area where new signings will be needed over the upcoming summer.

After impressing against Bournemouth in a 2-0 win, the Albion crashed to an embarrassing defeat to Stoke City.

“The defending, especially for the second goal was terrible,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“From Steve Bruce’s point of view, the experience he has in that defence, you don’t expect a player to be able to just run onto a simple ball in behind and head it in from 10 yards out.

“Switching off at the first one as well, a ball down the side and then the own goal from Livermore, it’s almost comical.

“He’ll be pulling his hair out will Steve Bruce. That is certainly an area that will be looked at over the summer for the start of next season.”

Not good enough.

When your experienced players such as Jake Livermore and Kyle Bartley are consistently making mistakes, change is needed.

Bruce will know that, and he is already openly admitting that he is looking at the transfer window already.

Changes must be a priority, and the defence is certainly one of those areas.
