Championship season is over for West Brom already - Kevin Phillips

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has insisted that West Brom have run their course in the Championship this season with two games to go.

The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that others would have needed to lose every game before Coventry left The Hawthorns with a draw.

The Albion are now eight points behind Sheffield United and will need to look forward to the Championship again next season.

“At the end of the day, they couldn’t afford any slip-ups,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“They were relying on other teams not to win any games, and you have to be a realist.

“As much as it may have been mathematically possible, a realist, which a lot of people are, you have to believe that unfortunately their course is now run, they won’t make the playoffs. Overall, it’s disappointing.”

Disappointing.

There isn’t much that Steve Bruce could have done really, with this squad of players clearly missing something.

Valerien Ismael got them off to a flying start, but the second half of the season has been more relegation form than promotion.

The sooner it is accepted that all that matters is next season, the rebuild can really begin at The Hawthorns.
