West Brom-linked Darragh Lenihan future 'all about money' - Alan Nixon
The future of Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan is up in the air with West Brom very keen on making him part of their rebuild next season.
Journalist for The Sun, Alan Nixon, shared yesterday (Sunday 1 May) that the Baggies had identified him and his Rovers teammate Joe Rothwell as two key players they wanted to sign.
Today though, he has provided an update as to why Lenihan’s contract situation is still undecided after being asked by someone on Twitter.
“All about money. Hear offer is decent. May get more elsewhere. May not,” Nixon wrote on his own personal Twitter account.
The 28-year-old will see his contract expire at the end of the 2021/22 season which is why Albion are trying to make a deal work while they don’t have to pay any kind of fee for his services.
Burnley are also interested in the Irishman while the Baggies face competition from Bournemouth for27-year-old midfielder Rothwell.
As Championship centre-halves go, not many are as consistently good as Lenihan is which is a large reason why he has received call-ups for the Republic of Ireland senior team in the past 12 months.
Rovers have massively benefitted from his constant presence at the heart of their defence despite falling away from the promotion race and out of the playoffs entirely having been up in second earlier in the season.
With Tony Mowbray ready to exit Ewood Park at the end of the 2021/22 season, there is no manager in place for next season who can convince Lenihan to stay in Lancashire which could be the open door that Albion have been looking for.
Steve Bruce should be looking to advance negotiations with the Irishman as quickly as possible when it is allowed because his composure in the back-line could be the answer to stopping goals from being shipped so easily.
Having him alongside Semi Ajayi and Matt Clarke, if he returns for another year from Brighton, would be the dream back three with Cedric Kipre and Kyle Bartley also able to slot in when needed.
