Kevin Phillips: West Brom need overhaul after uninspiring Conor Hourihane links
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has insisted that West Brom need to undergo a squad overhaul across the upcoming transfer window.
The ex-Baggies talisman admitted that Steve Bruce needs more youthful options rather than adding experience on top of what he has.
It comes after the Albion were linked with a summer move for Conor Hourihane from Aston Villa [Football League World].
“Again, he’s a midfielder who can score goals,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“I would understand why you would go for those types of players, but I think if you bring too many into the squad, I think West Brom need to have an overhaul.
“They have got some good players there, but I think bringing more experience in, might not be the way forward, but bringing youth, energy and pace in the squad as well as those who know the league.
“I think it’s right to get the balance right.”
Hourihane has been there and done it in the Championship, but so has so many of the current squad at The Hawthorns.
Phillips is spot on with his verdict that an overhaul is needed, with this season-ending in miserable failure.
This squad on paper is certainly one of the strongest in the Championship, yet here they are settling for mid-table mediocrity.
Bruce will want changes over the window, but he needs to be smart with what profile of player he brings in – promotion is the minimum goal next season.
