Steve Madeley says Steve Bruce didn't want to sign Jayson Molumby permanently for West Brom
Steve Bruce would not have signed Jayson Molumby permanently for West Brom had it not been for his loan clause being triggered, according to Steve Madeley.
The Baggies have confirmed the permanent signing of the Republic of Ireland international on a three-year contract, in a deal worth around £900,000 after he triggered his appearance clause earlier in the season.
But according to Madeley on his official Twitter account, he doesn’t believe that Bruce would have signed Molumby on a permanent deal if he had the choice as he wants more flair in midfield.
There is a feeling at West Brom however that Molumby can improve the creative side of his game after several good performances in recent weeks.
But with Bruce not convinced of his profile, it means he’s starting the season with a less than ideal squad as he looks to try and gain promotion back to the Premier League next season.
Molumby has had a decent spell at the club this season after his loan from Brighton, and he’s probably earned a permanent move with his performances.
But if Bruce wouldn’t have signed him had it not been for the clause in his contract forcing him to, then that probably doesn’t bode well for the upcoming campaign.
Bruce is likely to push for his own squad, which means Molumby will fall down the pecking order unless he is able to adapt to what the manager wants and quickly.
He’s been given ample opportunity since Bruce’s arrival in February to do that and has been good, but whether he can reach the level that West Brom need in that position remains to be seen.
Ultimately it’s a good deal on paper, but Bruce now must deal with a player he probably didn’t want in his squad going forward as he tries to push for promotion in one of the toughest leagues in the world.
