West Brom need to hold major talks despite 4-0 Barnsley win
West Brom completed their Championship season with a comfortable 4-0 win against Barnsley but it is far from sunshine and roses at The Hawthorns.
Karlan Grant’s brace along with goals from Adam Reach and Matt Clarke might have sent Baggies fans home happy on Saturday (7 May) but we can’t forget how poor this season has been.
Results elsewhere means Albion end the season in 10th in the table which is higher than they perhaps deserve after spending much of the season scraping through games.
The next couple of weeks might actually be the most important of the off-season because this is the time that the board, management and players need to get together and really identify what they want to become in the next two or three years.
Every Baggies fan wants to be back in the Premier League and battling the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea but on the face of it, we are a long way away from that.
Steve Bruce needs to be the man who sets those goals after he has been given the nod to maintain his role at the club for another season but his answer to the question needs to define his fate.
If he is committed to gaining promotion back to the Premier League again, then he can be given whatever resources necessary to do so but if he only wants to establish the side in the second tier, big talks are needed at board level.
Surely we can’t have a manager content with being a Championship side at the helm given the size of our club and especially budget compared to the rest of the division.
