'Crikey' - Keith Hackett stunned at West Brom penalty decision in big win v Barnsley

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom...

Keith Hackett has insisted that West Brom did not deserve their first penalty in the 4-0 win over Barnsley in the Championship on Saturday afternoon [07 May].

The ex-FIFA official was baffled as the referee was in a excellent position to see Clarke Odour get the ball but still pointed to the spot.

Karlan Grant fired home one penalty in the first half and missed another in the second as he failed to hit a hat-trick on the final day of the season.

Crikey,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

It didn’t look a penalty to me on the first view, no penalty.

“He’s got it wrong, it’s the wrong judgement. He’s got a good angle on it as well.”

Steve Bruce will have had no complaints about the decision.

It was about time the Baggies were handed some luck and a penalty choice that went their way, with plenty going against them this season – it just came too late when it meant nothing.

We can recall many mistakes where the officials failed to hand The Albion clear penalties, including games at Queens Park Rangers and Birmingham this season.

This one came on the final day and meant nothing, leading us to think that VAR is the right way forward, the Championship is crying out for some consistency.
