West Brom shouldn’t wait on target Darragh Lenihan as he waits for Blackburn Rovers managerial situation to become clearer
It has been reported by the Sun’s Alan Nixon last week, [2 May] that Steve Bruce is keen to add the 28-year-old defender to his ranks.
However, According to the Lancashire Telegraph on Friday [13 May] the two-time Republic of Ireland international is waiting for the managerial situation to become clearer at Ewood Park before making a decision on his future.
Blackburn have confirmed that Tony Mowbray will leave the club and that the recruitment process for their new boss is underway.
As per the Lancashire Telegraph, talks have taken place with Lenihan and finances are not thought to be an issue for the defender.
If Bruce wants to land Lenihan, he may well have to play a waiting game with the defender.
Lenihan is clearly content at Blackburn and doesn’t want to actively leave the club at present.
So, unsurprisingly, he doesn’t want to commit his future to Rovers or look elsewhere until he knows the outcome of the Lancashire side’s managerial outcome.
It could be a while until this transfer saga is concluded and Bruce shouldn’t wait on the defender and risk missing out on other targets.
The Baggies are certainly not short in defensive areas and boast a decent defensive record.
Lenihan would be a solid signing to add some depth for Bruce’s side, but he is certainly not the be all and end all.
If the 28-year-old’s contract saga trundles on throughout the summer, then Bruce would be better off looking elsewhere.
The Baggies also have highly-rated defender Caleb Taylor looking to impress Bruce during the preseason.
If Bruce deems him a viable option then a move for Lenihan could become unlikely.
In other West Brom news, Bruce has raved about a “really top class” member of his squad who finished the season strongly.
