West Brom U23s generate 'best Hawthorns atmosphere' in cup win - Steve Madeley

The West Brom Under-23 side won their first Premier League Cup on Friday (13 May) as they won the Black Country derby against Wolves.

The game took place at The Hawthorns and the game was very well attended with nearly 2,000 travelling supporters and they got to see their side twice take the lead on the night but the Baggies pegged them back on both occasions to take the game to penalties.

Ethan Ingram netted the winning spot-kick to earn Richard Beale’s side a glorious evening and their first Premier League Cup at their home ground.

The Athletic’s West Brom reporter Steve Madeley was in attendance on Friday and he was in awe of the atmosphere that both sets of fans created for what was only an academy game rather than a senior side contest.

“It might only be a third of the average (official) attendance but this is probably the best Hawthorns atmosphere since last autumn,” Madeley said via his personal Twitter account. “Huge noise when that equaliser went in. Amazing what a bit of spirit and fight will do.

Food for thought

Steve Bruce might have already gone swanning off on his summer holidays after the Championship season finished last Saturday (7 May) but he will have certainly taken note of a few standout performers last night.

Quevin Castro and Mo Faal scored the Baggies goals on the night but there were also composed performances at the back from Caleb Taylor and goalkeeper Ted Cann who made multiple shootout saves.

Some of those who really showed up on the big occasion might not have even been on Bruce’s radar for a senior appearance but he can only ignore the club’s academy for so long.

He might think he’s already done enough with Taylor Gardner-Hickman breaking into the first team (the reason he didn’t play on Friday) but he needs to realise that there are more talented youngsters coming through.

He’s already lost Reyes Cleary after his mammoth season in front of goal and he can’t afford to snub too many more of these youngsters before they also force a move away and eventually come back to haunt Albion.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are one of the biggest underachievers of the season according to new data.
