West Brom future on cliff edge for Kean Bryan after Semi Ajayi news

West Brom are starting to look a touch over-saturated in the centre-half department with Steve Bruce likely to offload at least one defender this summer.

We don’t know who that player will be yet but we do know it won’t be Semi Ajayi after the Nigerian put pen to paper on a new deal at The Hawthorns on Monday (16 May).

The 28-year-old has played nearly every minute of football since Steve Bruce took over as manager of the Baggies and has been rewarded for his solid defensive abilities.

That does leave the question open over who might be the one who has to leave and it is a debate that Bruce and his staff will be going over on a very regular basis.

Kyle Bartley and Dara O’Shea only have one year left on their current deals which could put them in danger of the chop but they also played a major part in the Albion side towards the end of last season.

Cedric Kipre is maybe the least likely to leave having two years still to run on his deal at The Hawthorns but he also didn’t play a great deal under Bruce despite a good run in the side with the previous manager Valerien Ismael.

Matt Clarke looks set to return to Brighton although a move for him wouldn’t be a surprise and that leaves just 25-year-old Kean Bryan.

The former England Under-20 international was signed by Ismael in the summer of 2021 but spent much of the 2021-22 season out injured so Bruce never got the chance to have a proper look at his ability.

He too has just one year left on his deal and having been signed by the previous regime, he looks likely to be the favourite to be sold if someone comes in with a good enough offer for his services.

Having played just three Championship games last season, he could be one that struggles to garner interest and the Baggies may have to settle for a loan and then lose him on a free unless he can get back fit and impress in pre-season.

In other West Brom news, Bruce is keen to sure up a problem area for Albion by raiding his former club for a 31-year-old Englishman who’s been left out to dry.
