West Brom boss Steve Bruce shares glowing John Swift verdict

Steve Bruce has insisted that John Swift has always “impressed” him as a player after the midfielder joined West Brom.

The former Chelsea youngster was involved in 25 goals in the Championship which helped Reading narrowly escape relegation to League One.

With his Madejski Stadium contract expiring at the end of June, Swift will arrive at the Hawthorns on a free transfer ahead of next season.

The Albion boss admitted that after early conversations with the Englishman, he was their number one priority.

He said via the Baggies’ Twitter: “As a club, we identified the need for a creative attacking player in our midfield.

“And from the earliest conversations, John has been our first choice.

“He has always impressed me as a player. And I am now excited to have him at our disposal next season.”

That is how you prepare for the summer transfer window – hats off to West Brom who have some brilliant forward planning.

The window doesn’t even open until June 10 but Albion are wasting no time in getting ahead of the rest as they look to rebuild in the summer.

This is very similar to the signing of Daryl Dike in January where the deal was all but done and the Baggies announced it on the first day of the window.

It is hugely positive that Bruce and co are genuinely assessing the strengths and weaknesses in the squad and actually trying to do something about it.

That seems like a fairly normal thing to do but going by the clubs’ previous transfer history – it hasn’t always been the case.

Swift is already a proven Championship player with him almost single handily keeping Reading up this season whilst bagging goals and assists for fun.

The interest shown by Leeds United goes to show that he is good enough for the Premier League, should the Baggies get promoted next season which is certainly the goal for Bruce.
