West Brom join hunt to sign Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O'Brien for £12m

West Brom are among a number of clubs in the hunt to sign Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien this summer, according to TeamTalk.

The news outlet reported on their website on 1 June that Albion’s Championship rivals Sheffield United are also keen on the 23-year-old, who’s also wanted by several teams in the Premier League.

It is understood that due to Huddersfield’s failure to win promotion to the Premier League in 2021/22, O’Brien has an active £12million release clause in his contract.

Huddersfield are reportedly “powerless” to stop O’Brien move on after the central midfielder impressed in their unsuccessful promotion bid, which ended at Wembley on Sunday (29 May) in the Championship play-off final.

No way

Albion might hold an interest in O’Brien but the chances of them getting a deal done for the English midfielder are surely slim to none.

O’Brien was one of the standout midfielders of the 2021/22 season in the Championship.

He played 50 times in all competitions for Huddersfield, scoring three goals and supply three assists from the centre of the Yorkshire club’s midfield.

Steve Bruce’s midfield definitely needs to be spruced up this summer and the addition of John Swift on a free transfer has already helped out a lot.

However, Jake Livermore, Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby really didn’t impress this season so we’re definitely open to Bruce adding more quality in the middle of the park.

But O’Brien is already at a club that’s outperformed West Brom in the Championship and his £12million release clause means nothing to the Baggies – that’s unaffordable.

O’Brien is bound to join a club in the Premier League like Leeds, who were linked with a move for the Colchester-born ace last year too.

Crystal Palace, Southampton, Bournemouth and Fulham are also reportedly keen on him.

In other West Brom news, this Albion chief is in the process of leaving The Hawthorns.
