West Brom spending £900k to sign Jayson Molumby a bad move

Championship club West Brom have permanently signed Jayson Molumby on a three-year deal from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

The 22-year-old initially joined the club on a loan deal last season, making 31 appearances and contributing one goal.

Bruce was excited after signing the Ireland international in a deal worth £900,000.

“We are very pleased to have Jayson here on a permanent deal,” he said. “Despite being only 22, he has played 75 games in the championship.

“He is pushing his way into the starting XI and continuing to show improvements in his game”

Big waste?

No matter how one would look at it, there was clearly a reason why Graham Potter never fancied Molumby in the Brighton’s senior side in the Premier League.

There is no reason to judge the decision-making skills of a man like Potter who has completely transformed Brighton in the recent past.

The Irishman had a rating of 6.60 during the 21-22 Championship season which can be considered average at best. Despite having a fantastic passing accuracy of 85%, he only made 0.6 key passes per match, considerably lower.

Also, with John Swift arriving from Reading on a free transfer, this move does not make much sense either as both players play a similar role. Therefore, that money should and could’ve been invested somewhere else.

In the 31 games he played for the Baggies last season, the 22-year-old came from the bench 14 times, a prime example that at best, Molumby will only add to the squad depth.

This could prove to be a real waste – let’s hope not.

In other West Brom news, new signing John Swift could do with brushing up on his Albionknowledge after a poor spelling faux pas on Twitter.
