West Brom: BBC pundit questions pursuit of 'top drawer' Darragh Lenihan
West Brom are still chasing Blackburn Rovers’ Darragh Lenihan to bolster their defence but Carlton Palmer isn’t sure about their transfer strategy.
The Baggies were linked with a move for the Republic of Ireland international on 1 May by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon (via his Patreon page), with the 28-year-old likely to leave Ewood Park on a free transfer come 1 July.
Steve Bruce wants to make additions all over the pitch but BBC pundit Palmer is not convinced that defence is where they need to be targeting first after a lacklustre 2021-22 campaign in front of goal.
“Well, he’s certainly a top drawer defender in that league and he’s a good player,” the former England international said to Football League World.
“But, I think, if I’m right, West Brom had one of the best defensive records in the league last season, I think they kept 19 clean sheets.
“Their problem was, even from under Ismael, was they didn’t take their chances, they created a host of chances and didn’t take them.
“But the championship is a tough, uncompromising league so you will pick up injuries and you will pick up suspensions and you need a squad and I think that’s what Steve’s trying to do.”
You can see where Palmer is coming from here and Bruce will be one of the first to admit that they did not do enough in front of goal during the 2021-22 season but there has been movement on that front too.
We’ve already brought in 26-year-old John Swift from Reading after 11 goals and 13 assists for the Royals despite finishing 21 in the division and we got him for free too which will please the board.
We also have Daryl Dike returning to fitness after spending almost the entirety of the second half of the season out injured.
Valerien Ismael brought him in from Orlando City for big money but we never got to see the best of him so the 21-year-old American international is like a new signing too.
More has to be done without question but we equally weren’t the best defensive team in the league last term so that also needs to be improved on if we can.
